Flags for Heroes Volunteer Page – CLICK LINKS BELOW TO VOLUNTEER

We will be planting 600 flags in the ground on Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19 to honor our heroes.  WE NEED YOUR HELP!  Please click the link below for the task you wish to help with.  Sign up Genius will offer your choice of date and times and provide contact info for questions.  An “instructor” will be present at each shift to train and oversee.

FLAG ASSEMBLY

These 10’ flags come unassembled in boxes – scroll below for picture.  Each flag takes about 5 minutes to assemble.  We need 8 volunteers for final assembly and transport of the flags.  The shift is on Saturday, May 18 @ 9:00-11:30am.  The shifts will take place at the Extra Space Storage located at 903 Lambeth Circle, Durham NC 27705.

STAKING

Staking takes place, separately from Flag Assembly, on site at HubRTP.  Each stake takes around 8-9 minutes depending on skill and soil condition – picture below shows mallets, but we will be providing drills (or bring your own).  We need two shifts for 12 volunteers at 3 hours/shift to lay the stakes.  The days are Friday, May 17 @ 5:30-8:30am, and Saturday, May 18 @ 8:30-11:30am.  The shifts will take place at the “honor field” at 300 Park Offices Drive, Durham NC 27709.

MEDALLION ASSEMBLY

Medallions come pre-printed – scroll below for picture.  Volunteers peel adhesive from back, stick provided sponsor/hero name labels on the medallions, and re-adhere.  Each medallion takes about 3 minutes to assemble.  We need two shifts with 4 and 6 volunteers, respectively, at 2 hours/shift to assemble the medallions.  The shifts will be on Saturday, May 18 @ 10:00-noon, location TBD and Saturday, June 1, 9:00-11am and will take place at Extra Space Storage located at 903 Lambeth Circle, Durham NC 27705.

FLAG MOUNTING

The Flags and Medallions will be transported to the field at 2:00pm on Sunday, May 19.  Volunteers will then help place the flags into the pre-laid sockets, and also attach medallions to the flags.  We need 25+ volunteers for 2:00-5:30pm on Sunday, May 19 to help mount the flags at the “honor field” at 300 Park Offices Drive, Durham NC 27709.

NOTE: The final flag should be mounted by 5pm, at which time there will be a Flag Raising Celebration. All members of the Durham community, whether volunteers are not, are invited to the Flag Raising.
