New Member: Bill Greeley

Please introduce yourself and welcome Bill Greeley to the Club. Bill was inducted on May 14, 2018 and his sponsor was Peter Jacobi. Below is his biographical information.

Bill Greeley is the former President of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Practice Association (CHOPPA) and President of the Medical Staff at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).  In these roles he was responsible for both the Physician Organization and Medical Staff Affairs for CHOP’s $2.5 billion dollar a year Health System. He led the development of CHOPPA from a 180 physician, $160 million physician organization to the current 750 physician, $650 million multispecialty group practice. During his tenure, Bill was the trusted physician leader of the Physician Organization who drove the strategic and operational integration of the Faculty and Medical Staff with the CHOP Health System and its Primary Care network.  He also directed the integration of the faculty with the Quality and Patient Safety programs, and with the Research Institute.

Prior to his appointment as President of CHOPPA and the Medical Staff, Bill served as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at CHOP. He also held a faculty appointment as Professor of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

Bill is currently a president and consultant for Greeley, Hamilton & Associates, LLC, a Healthcare consulting group. He is also a Consultant for Executive Service Corps of the Triangle, a consulting firm for Nonprofits.  Bill is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at Duke School of Medicine in Durham, NC.

Bill began his medical career at Duke University Medical Center where he started and led new programs in Pediatric Anesthesiology and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Later, he served as Division Chief of Pediatric Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Duke, where he also had a short tenure as the Chief Medical Officer for Pediatric Services.

Bill has a passion for physician leadership development and hospital system alignment.  His background, training and expertise in academic medicine and business have contributed to his success as a mission-driven leader who is recognized nationally for his innovation in organizational and business development. He is adept at strategic visioning, operational execution and driving change.

Bill has served as a member of the Board of Trustees at CHOP from 1998-2004 and again 2013 to 2016.  He has also served on several Board Sub-committees, which included the Executive, Audit, Research and Patient Safety Committees. He is a former President and Board of Director for the Society of Pediatric Anesthesiology as well as a former Board Director for the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. In addition to his national Board positions, Bill has served as an advisor to many children’s hospitals in areas such as physician and medical staff organization, health system governance and business development.

Bill is a native of Buffalo, New York.  He has a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Professional studies from the University of Notre Dame and a medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.  He also has a MBA degree from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and a Certificate of Director Education from Drexel University’s Lebow School of Business.  Bill is the author of numerous scholarly articles, editorials and reviews as well as an editor of several major textbooks in his area of medical expertise.
