Rotary Supports the Emily K “Scholars for College” Program

Our Rotary Club administers two scholarship funds through the Triangle Foundation to support the youth in our community.  The Brown Family Scholarship, in memory of Fred and Shirley Brown, was recently awarded to Vianey Martinez.  The Rotary Board, in conjunction with the Brown Family determined that the goals of the Emily K Center’s “Scholars to College Program” aligned with the spirit of the scholarship and decided to award the scholarship to a graduating senior from the inagural class of Scholars to College.  These students demonstrate academic stamina, strong leadership skills, and serve as mentors and role models for younger students. All have a desire to further their education by attending college.

Vianey Martinez, (center in the picture) a graduate of Southern High School, graduated second in her class with a weighted GPA of over 4.6  She is a leader on campus, serving as Student Government Treasurer and President of the Future Business Leaders of America.  Vianey has authored several ‘My Views’ articles in the Durham News and has worked with SEEDS (South Eastern Efforts Developing Sustainable Spaces) throughout her high school years.  Vianey will be attending UNC Chapel Hill and plans to study business with the goal of entering the accounting profession.

With Vianey in the picture are Durham Rotary President Don Stanger, Ashlea Hitchcock, Programming and Partnerships Coordinator for the Emily K Center, Durham Rotary Vice President Meg Solera and Adam Eigenrauch, the Executive Director of the Emily K Center.
